Chadderton 2-9 (nine) AFC Liverpool
15 Aug 2015 by Ian Pickstock
Steve Jones grabbed the headlines by scoring five as AFC Liverpool were rampant in their Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round match firing nine goals past Chadderton.
The Reds, wearing their purple away kit, scored after only four minutes as Ryan Cox went in one-on-one, but his shot was deflected away. The ball was cleared but only as far as Liam Loughlin, who stepped sideways to avoid a challenge and blasted the ball superbly through a crowded box into the bottom corner.
Four minutes later Francis Barry doubled the lead, finishing off a slick passing move and slotting home comfortably from an excellent through-ball from Ryan Cox
Paul Moore’s side were utterly dominant as Chadderton’s defence couldn’t keep pace, and Jones scored his first of the game before fifteen minutes had been played, with Cox again providing the assist.
Cox won a corner on twenty minutes, and played it short to Loughlin, who played the pacy forward in again close to the by-line and Cox chipped on to the head of Barry, who got the fourth for the visitors with a looping header taking Chadderton keeper Sean Carr by surprise.
Jones displayed some excellent footwork, dribbling into the area and firing home the fifth goal on twenty-four minutes, leaving spectators wondering just how many AFC could score, so comprehensive was their performance.
In fact, the Reds took their foot off the gas sightly for the remainder of the half, happy to retain possession in the middle third, but Jones got his hat-trick a minute before half time, controlling Steve Williams’ pass with the outside of his foot and firing home to make it 0-6 at the break.
The Chadderton players were playing for pride as the match resumed, but their performance certainly improved, as James Curley made surging runs in from the left flank, and Daniel Murray tried an audacious lob over Ryan Jones from the halfway line which landed on the roof of the net.
However, it was AFC who scored next in the sixty-second minute. Substitute Ronnie Morgan, who had only been on the pitch two minutes, netted as Carr was only able to parry Cox’s initial shot. Morgan got to the ball first and the keeper got a touch again, but it wasn’t enough and the ball bobbled over the line.
Two minutes later, Francis Barry played a ball into the channel for Cox, who was the provider again, this time passing unselfishly across the area to an unmarked Jones, who slotted home his fourth and AFC Liverpool’s eighth.
Chadderton were able to spare their blushes somewhat after Sean Sherwood won a penalty on seventy-one minutes, which was converted by Matthew Russell. Two minutes later they scored from open play as Curley tested Ryan Jones, only for the ball to fall into the path of Keith Melvin who passed the ball through a crowd into the net making it 2-8.
Steve Jones had saved his most audacious goal til last. From the restart following Chadderton’s second, he immediately replied with a superb strike from the halfway line which landed perfectly in the top left corner beyond the reach of Carr, prompting hysteria amongst the travelling supporters.
There were more than a few whispers that Jones might be deserving of FA man of the round, following his 5 goal haul, as the game finished 2-9, and AFC Liverpool progress to host Radcliffe Borough in the next round.
